AGP vs. PCI - The Whole Truth
by Head Chef Jérôme Courtois
You have a Socket 7 motherboard and you love your PCI slots: Good for You!!. Although
Socket 7 motherboards offer an AGP port it doesn't really work well. We found that at
least 75% of these motherbaords (whatever the brand) won't work right, or ever at all,
with high end AGP cards (Voodoo2, Riva TNT, Voodoo Banshee...). But it seems to work OK
with video cards like S3 4MB AGP cards.
In comparison we didn't experience any problems with Pentium II motherboards with the BX
chipset.
The AGP port offers better performance than PCI, but unfortunately in computer land when
you start upgrading one piece of hardware, something else will surely go.
